Born In The Underground

Necromanicide formed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1991, cutting technical thrash/death riffs into the country's small but committed tape-trading underground. The band ran through its first era from 1991 to 1997, then went dark.

The only release from that era, Hate Regime, came out on Pony Canyon in 1998: twelve tracks of dense, technical thrash/death carrying openly Christian lyrical themes, a rare stance in Malaysia's largely secular and often hostile metal scene of the time.

The Hate Regime lineup was Andre (guitars, vocals), Nick Lee (guitars), Adrian (bass, vocals), Stefan (bass), and Jeret Christopher (drums). Andre carried the band's DNA forward through Malaysia's Christian metal scene in the years after. Necromanicide itself remains dormant today.

The name itself carries meaning. Necromancy comes from the Greek nekros ("dead body") and manteia ("divination"), the practice of communicating with the dead; -cide comes from the Latin caedere ("to kill"), the same root behind homicide and genocide.

Literally, the killing of necromancy: the destruction of the practice of communicating with the dead.

"The music is very technical thrash/death metal," though technical complexity sometimes overshadows melodic hooks. No Life 'til Metal, album notes on Hate Regime
